Q&A session with Dorte Knudsen

How did you arrive at Texas' pet name?
Texas already was called so as we got him. We adopted him when he was 1½ years old

Are there any special reasons why you specifically selected him?
He came to us because we had lost our daughters housecat, who was killed by a car. Earlier we had a colourpoint Persian who died at an age of 15 years. At first we didn’t want a cat again, but we just couldn’t live without this furry wonderful creature in our lives. We decided to look for at Maine Coon, as we had talked about this breed earlier. A cat that could live in the house or could live with a outside run. No more cats on the road among the cars. Figaro who was killed by a car was only 1 year old, so we had just had a kitten in our house. We decided to try to give a grownup cat a new home, and on the web on a danish page for cats who are looking for a new home, we found Texas – big, red and with lots of personality. It had to be him! We contacted Kazandra at WaterCoons, and we visited her and Texas. He moved in with us, and not one day passes, without we feel happy, that we were allowed to take him in.

Can you tell us a little bit about Texas' toe configuration?
Texas has a double dewclaw but no extra toes. We call him a “hidden poly” or in disguise, as he is able to take part in Fife shows, and actually now is international champion.

What do you like about having a polydactyl cat?
I have heard that the polys have more personality. Texas must have heard that too – he has really lots of it. One judge described him as a Garfield with lots of personality – i couldn’t say it better. He is convinced, that he owns this house, and we live here to serve him. When he wants something, he just sits on a table, and starts throwing things down, if we don’t react as fast as he thinks we should. Texas hasn’t extra toes, but he has huge paws as he is a very big boy and strong build. So he has no trouble throwing cups and cans down. When he walks over the floor, you can actually her him, he doesn’t sneak :o)

Are there many Maine Coon Polydactyl Cats in Denmark?
I don’t know, but I know some beautiful polys........

What sort of reaction do you get generally from people in Denmark about having a Maine Coon Polydcatyl Cat?
Most people don’t know that he is a poly, but almost everyone who meets Texas, loves him. When i tell about his dewclaw, they jut say it makes him even more special. And they are right.

What are your favourite things about Texas?
Oh, this is difficult – he is such a wonderful personality to have around. But I just love when he sleeps on the back, full of confidence just lays there on the floor, table or couch, trusting that we will take good care of him. And when he is running to one of the dogs, begging for some earwashing :o) He loves when they wash his ears, his head yes, a all over wash is the best.
