Kumskaka's First Love as a kitten

Q&A session with Berit Sorensen of Wackymoon Coon

How did you arrive at Flirt's pet name?
Flirt had his pet name from his breeder Phyllis. I think it suits him well ;-)

Flirt traveled a long way to be with you. Are there any special reasons why you specifically selected him?
I felt very honoured to be able to have a poly boy and since I am also working with new foundation lines, he just couldn’t have been a better choice.

I still feel very grateful to his breeder Phyllis Tobias/ Kumskaka, for letting me have him.

Can you tell us a little bit about Flirt's toe configuration?
Flirt is poly on all four feet. He has 6 toes on his front paws. His dew claw is a long thumb and then the extra toe is besides his thumb and his "ordinary" toes. In his back paws he has a dew claw.

What do you like about having a polydactyl cat?
I love watching those huge paws. The cat has so much benefit from the extra toes. My poly cats love to slide over the floor. The use the paws like a skateboard. It makes all the regular toed Maine Coon’s very jealous to watch the fun they have ;-)

Are there many Maine Coon Polydactyl Cats in Denmark?
There are a few breeders who have maintained to have a polydactyl Maine Coon in their breeding program. Most of them are from the same poly cats to begin with. Over the last few years the interest for having poly’s have increased, so more “new”  Poly lines are appearing now in Denmark.

What sort of reaction do you get generally from people in Denmark about having a Maine Coon Polydcatyl Cat?
I believe some breeders think it is wrong to have a poly male in breeding program. It is not something I know for sure though ;-) I have never had any “bad” comments about it.

Everybody who has seen Flirt, have loved him from the first sight J

Flirt is one of your stud boys at Wackymoon Coon. What sort of traits is he passing to his offspring?
Sometimes he is very polite and pass on his poly paws ;-) he always pass on very huge paws, no matter how many toes the kittens has. Then he passes on a nice rich thick fur a gentle playful temper. He also passes on a nice strong chin, broad muzzle and strong boning. I believe he could make lovely babies, no matter what female he is mixed with. Flirt has a little shy temper, but not bad.

He doesn’t want to have too much fuss around him. When we have visitors he don’t mind showing of his paws, but then he prefer to be left alone again. He is very devoted to his family and especially his mum. When he was a kitten he would jump upon my shoulder every time I stood still long enough. He could actually jump from the floor and up to my shoulders. I think it is because of the “power” in his hind feet. I am pretty tall so he had to jump high ;-) When he landed it felt like a touch from a butterfly landing, very elegant despite of his size.

He still likes to sit on my shoulder and if he gets shy or sad he hides his face under my arm. We can do anything to him without him getting mad. I never heard him hiss or anything at anyone.

Do you notice any difference in your polydactyl kittens and cats as apposed to a regular toed Maine Coon?
I don’t think there is much difference in a kitten from a polydactyl mating, no matter if they have the extra toes or not. They are sturdier than the non-poly litters, more devoted, simply cuter ;-)

Maine Coon’s are cool cats and Maine Coon poly’s are cooler J

What are your favourite things about Flirt?
I LOVE every single bit of him J

I love his look, his temper, and his huge paws. I even love the funny way he talks to me. He doesn’t meow, he grunts like a Bear J
