Avena Relaxing Polydactyl Kitten~ Avena

Q&A session with Céline Bouldoires

How did you arrive at Avena's pet name?
I had had the name “Avena” (meaning wild oats in latin) in mind for a long time. I was just looking for the right cat to fit it! My husband thinks it sounds like some brand of dish soap:) Her breeder had named her Bamsemor meaning cuddly she-bear in the Danish language, and it would have suited her too.

Are there any special reasons why you specifically selected her and why are these important to you ?
I had been looking for a Maine Coon cat (not specifically a poly) and just happened by the Lykken MC website where she was featured. It was love at the first sight!

Can you tell us a little bit about Avena's toe configuration?
She is polydactyl on all four feet with a 6/6/6/6 configuration. Her feet are of the snowshoe type where the additional digits are real toes. She has HUGE feet!

What do you like about having a polydactyl cat?
A lot of things: the heavy boning, sweet yet very self-assured temper, and of course the huge teddy bear feet.

Are there many Maine Coon Polydactyl Cats in Switzerland?
That I know of, another one who was imported from Denmark in late 2006.

What sort of reaction do you get generally from people in Switzerland about having a Maine Coon Polydcatyl Cat?
Well, not many, as she doesn’t get out much J. Seriously, every person who has met her loves her and admires her big feet – but they do not notice they are polydacyl until we tell them to look closely!

They are not accepted by any registry in Switzerland, even the more open ones, and I think it is a pity.

What are your favourite things about Avena?
Her sweet temper, definitely, and of course her very special appearance. She was recently joined by a second poly girl, perhaps you’ll see her featured when she grows up!
