Maine Coon Polydactyl Cat

Q&A session with Sheila Curtis

How did you arrive at Missy's pet name?
Missy's name is short for her full pedigree name which came from the Mamaku Blue Winery based in New Zealand. The blue fitted as she is a blue tabby and the company is based in NZ where Missy was born. What I also liked is the history of the blueberry which originates in North East America (as the Maine Coon) and was introduced to sailors in Plymouth (strong poly connection). So, overall, I thought this quite applicable:) She also responds to "Kiwi" - VBG!

Are there any special reasons why you specifically selected her?
I had been searching a long time for a polydactyl cat to import to the UK. I wanted to make sure it was from a breeder who was health concious that I trusted and I wanted the lines to be a little different to what I already have here so she would be a good outcross to the cats I already have in my home. Of course, being blue was an unexpected bonus for me.

Can you tell us a little bit about Missy's toe configuration?
Missy has 7 digits on each front paw.

What do you like about having a polydactyl cat?
Well, it is all still very new to me at the moment and I am still a little in awe. Missy is so special anyway due to her wonderful temperament, her poly paws are a big bonus. She has this beautiful way of displaying her feet, she lies next to me and then stretches out her paws and gently touches my face, she can lie with me for ages like this, sometimes I wake up to find both her paws cradling each side of my face whilst she is also sleeping. I love the way she also curls and uses her paws just how we do with our hands. Most importantly I am just glad she is here and we can do our bit to try and help reintroduce the Maine Coon Poly back into this country.

My eldest son says if he catches her holding a pen then he is going to teach her how to do his homework! (I daren't show him the photo, lol).

Are there many Maine Coon Polydactyl Cats in the UK?
As far as I am aware Missy is the second active, breeding poly in the UK, the first arrived about 8 weeks or so ago. Hopefully these 2 girls will help raise the profile here and more breeders will decide to work with a MC polydactyl cat. We hope to raise those numbers though very soon, so watch this space!

What sort of reaction do you get generally from people in England about having a Maine Coon Polydcatyl Cat?
Missy has only been here a short time so it is still very early days. I have quite a few breeder friends who are waiting to meet her and very intrigued to see her poly paws. Generally the polys seem to be far more accepted now within the breeding community compared to even just 18 months ago. The tides are certainly turning. Some pet owners/fanciers havent heard of the polys and are interested to learn more, some have been waiting for the MC poly to return to the UK or grew up with a non pedigree poly (we used to have polys here called the "Yorkshire Cat") and are looking for another.

What are your favourite things about Missy?
I love her cuddles and the gentle, serene aura she has is truly unique. She will let me do anything to her and just lives to be loved. She will always be so very special due to what I have been through to get her here and the fact she is a poly. I feel very humbled by her and the connection we share.
I am totally smitten, can you tell:)
