Maine Coon Polydactyl Kitten

Q&A session with Deb Brown

How did you arrive at Bears' pet name?
Bear came with his pet name. From the first baby pictures we saw he looked like a little blue teddy bear and we just called him Bear. Lol there was just no other name for him and it suits him perfectly.

Are there any special reasons why you specifically selected him?
Our dream was one day to have a blue Maine Coon Poly in our home and we had been looking for ages. We heard about the arrival of this kitten and contacted the breeder immediately. We saw his baby pictures and fell in love instantly. Personality was a key issue with us and Berit was sure this confident little bundle of fur would fit in with our family. So there it was, our dreamed of colour, personality and a poly!

Can you tell us a little bit about Bears' toe configuration?
Bear’s toe configuration is special. He presents regular toes on the front feet but has a dewclaw on each rear foot. We suspect he may have very small under developed nubs on his front feet, but only an x-ray can determine that. He is our poly in disguise:)

What do you like about having a polydactyl cat?
Everything!!

Are there many Maine Coon Polydactyl Cats in Canada?
I don’t know, but I know some beautiful polys........ I would speculate that there is not. There was only one MC breeder in Canada that I am aware of that bred the polys. We are the only ones attending CCA shows with a Maine Coon Poly…and it caused quite a stir when we first arrived on the show scene

What sort of reaction do you get generally from people in Canada about having a Maine Coon Polydcatyl Cat?
The reaction is fantastic with the general public! People love the polydactyl cat and to have a Maine Coon with their size and beauty really attracts a crowd. Once the questions start more people stop to listen and learn. It is also amazing to hear how many people have had polydactyls in their lives (domestic cats) and are just tickled to actually see one in a show ring and a Maine Coon to boot.
We also do demonstrations at public schools. Most times we have a hard time getting to the classrooms with people wanting to see the cats, and because we do the demonstrations at the end of the school day, we don’t usually get to pack up and leave until most of the kids and teachers have gone home.

What are your favourite things about Bear?
Lol Bear is our “wild thing”. He has all the confidence in the world and no fear. This combined with his outgoing personality makes him a real character. He loves to be loved and greets any person coming into our home. Bear arrived here, introduced himself and became part of the family in the blink of an eye, the other cats and dog didn’t stand a chance J He has the wonderful ability to make you smile or laugh. No matter what Bear gets into, you have to forgive him. It is because of his endearing nature. Most cats will get themselves into a bit of trouble and run. Bear will stay…look at what he has done, and then give you a look that says “Wow, that was great…want to see it again?” What a guy!!
